Such was the unexpected bout of good weather on the afternoon of Sunday, 15th April 2012 that some people were heard to say that it was a shame the celebration wasn’t taking place outside in park next to the Irish Association Social Club, Chorlton, Manchester.

The Irish Association club was first used by the Association in April 2009 and judging by the number of people who attended this year a bigger venue might have to be found.  After all the available chairs and tables had been taken up there were numerous people who only had the option to stand up. Certainly there was certainly in the region of several hundreds attending the celebration.

The programme for the afternoon programme started at 1.00 pm with Association President Puspa Shrestha welcoming the capacity crowd which included members of the Association and British friends. The President extended the New Year greetings to all.

A delicious Nepalese Buffet was served up at 2.00 pm and was provided by Raj Kumar and Sophie Shrestha of the Himalayan Restaurant in Manchester.

A cultural programmed followed with a number of songs sung by a quartet consisting of Prasanta Shrestha and friends from the Manchester Youth Group. The dance component of the afternoon’s entertainment was performed by Suresh Shrestha, Renu Adhikari, Gopal Basnet and Manisha Vaidya (London), Janie Mali and Selina Mali (Birmingham), Kamala Adhikari, Sita Dhimal and Tika Dhimal (Manchester) who between them demonstrated a mixture of traditional Nepali and contemporary dance.

The dancers were award the Shanti Prem Award for their hard work.  The award is sponsored annually by Immediate Past President Dr. Prem Bikram Hamal and Mrs. Shanti Hamal.

This year’s “Woman of the Year Award” was presented to Asha Khadka in recognition of her contributions to the Association over the years.

The afternoon was rounded off by a Raffle and prizes were awarded to the winners.

The Association would like this opportunity to thank Event Co-ordinator Lilesh Pradhan, the Master of  Ceremony, Nirmal Karki, Brightsun Travel UK, the Himalayan Restaurant, the dancers, musicians and singers for providing an excellent programme of entertainment.

A hearty thanks is also given to all those people who attended this year’s New Year celebration and making it the success it was.
